This line has been the highest rated of any La Flor Dominicana. Connoisseurs appreciate the very full-bodied, robust and spicy character of the Coronado. The blend of the cigar has not changed since its debut in 2006. In that year Cigar Aficionado named it the #2 Cigar of the Year with a 93 rating (a Cuban was #1, making the Coronado the #1 non-Cuban) noting its caramel and leather notes. La Flor Dominicana is reintroducing this classic in 2015 with new packaging and labeling. Though the old band was really cool, La Flor Domicana thought brand identity was an issue with no real way to know clearly that it was an LFD product. The new LFD Coronado comes in 18-count boxes and with a new band clearly displaying LFD instead of the retro Coronado by La Flor label that was a gold and purple band with an embossed crown. The blend, however, has remained unchanged from the Coronado by La Flor classic. The Coronado still has a very oily sun-grown wrapper from the Jalapa valley of Nicaragua, a Dominican Corojo binder and filler blend that include Sumatra-seed, and Piloto Cubano from La Flor Dominicana's own farms in La Canela, Dominican Republic. The cigar, because of its heavy oils and its strong flavor profile ages very well. In fact, the 2006 classic reappeared in the October 2015 issue of Cigar Aficionado in the Connoisseurs Corner vintage tastings , with a 97 rating! From Cigar Aficionado editor Gordon Mott: "Just short of perfect, this Dominican cigar, a powerhouse in its youth, has mellowed with age, and it's now a perfect balance between earthy full flavor, and the robust sweetness of cocoa. The sweet and peppery finish goes on forever ."We shall have to wait to see if Coronado lanceros reappear, but for the time being we have five formats. This cigar is an unbeatable intersection of value, flavor, and quality. One of our favorites.
